These miniature sculptures are carved out of the pochote tree's prickles, which is part of its bark, making the extraction, non-destructive. The word pochote from Nahuatl pochotl means ceiba or silk cotton tree.
Artisans take advantage of the unique features of these prickles and the resemblance to Tepoztlan's landscape, delicately carving out miniature buildings drawn from the imagination.
Even though pochote's prickles are not very hard, carving and cutting the shapes require firm instruments and great dexterity.
