This miniature tripod Mexican molcajete (mortar) with temolote (pestle) is just 5 centimetres in diameter. Finely detailed by Villanueva workshop using simple tools and great mastery of materials.
The molcajete has been used by prehispanic Mesoamerican cultures, including the Aztec and Maya, stretching back several thousand years. It is typically round in shape and supported by three short legs.
