This gorgeous jaguar figure has been entirely handcrafted in clay by Tzeltal women of Chiapas.
The jaguar —a speciality of Amatenango's potters— in Mayan mythology is seen as the ruler of the Underworld and a symbol of the God of terrestrial fire and darkness. The jaguar remains revered among the indigenous who live closely with it.
